Corn Exchange Launches Schools Travel Bursary

A fisheye lens capture of the auditorium seating.

At the Corn Exchange we are acutely aware that in our rural county travel is a significant percentage of the cost for schools to engage in arts and cultural activities in the community.

Find out about the funding available for schools to cover the costs of travel to Corn Exchange events.

We've been working to apply for funding over the last 9 months to support schools, colleges and early years settings to travel to arts events and participation activities, and Greenham Common Trust and Englefield Charitable Trust are generously supporting this ambition over the next 18 months to 2 years.

Feedback we've received from schools tells us that fewer trips are being booked as a consequence of rising costs and tightening budgets. Feedback from parents also tells us that it is difficult for them to contribute to the costs of these trips on a regular basis.

As an organisation, we are also committed to developing audiences for the future, and for so many people their first experience of theatre or arts activities is through school. This bursary will enable schools to cover the costs of travel to Corn Exchange events and support the creative and cultural learning as well as the attainment of their students.

Any publicly funded school or early years setting (local authority, free, academy or voluntary aided) is eligible to apply for coach travel if they are:

  • Attending a performance, with pupils, at the Corn Exchange or New Greenham Arts that requires them to travel by minibus or coach
  • Taking part in a project with the Corn Exchange Learning and Participation Department which requires and offsite visit or taking part in an event at the Corn Exchange or New Greenham Arts

(Please note that the travel bursary does not cover pantomime performances)

We need to ensure that primary, secondary, FE and early years settings all have access to this fund so there are ring-fenced amounts available for each of these, and there is an application process involved.
