Beloved broadcaster and author of the bestselling Pies and Prejudice, Stuart Maconie, shares stories from his new book The Full English: A Journey in Search of a Country and Its People.

There are fashions in books just as in trousers, tattoos and tv shows.

Before George Orwell, there came J.B. Priestley, now largely unread except for his play An Inspector Calls, which remains on the GCSE syllabus. In 1933, J.B. Priestley swapped Bradford for a journey around Britain, travelling in part in a chauffeured Daimler, to write about England and its people.

Stuart Maconie follows the same route, with less glamorous transport (he begins on a Megabus) to discover what has changed, and what the future might hold for England.

Funny, insightful and timely, Stuart Maconie shares stories of the people and places to build a picture of the true state of our nation in 2023.

Buy Stuart’s latest book, The Full English, when you book your tickets and collect it at the show!

  • “A fine writer: sharp, funny, tender and thoughtful”
    The Spectator
  • “An heir to Alan Bennett … stirring and rather wonderful.”
    Sunday Times
  • “Maconie's engaging, conversational prose is full of telling detail, jokes and deft quotation.”
    The Telegraph
