Based on Bizet’s opera, the award-winning film Carmen was directed by Francesco Rosi who chose to set it in 1875 and filmed it on location in Andalusia. It stars Julia Migenes in the title role as a gamine Carmen whose sexuality attracts Don José, played by Plácido Domingo.

Lorin Maazel conducted the Orchestre National de France and the film won the 1985 Grammy Award for Best Opera Recording for its soundtrack. It also received nominations for the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film and several BAFTAs.
