Last week our Youth Companies took to our main stage to perform their own creative versions of the traditional Grimm's Fairy Tales.
The evening was opened by our talented Youth Dance Company who presented a piece that used several props to represent iconic elements of the stories, providing a perfect introduction to the evening.
The Mini Youth Drama Company followed with their version of Snow White. The company is made up of sixteen 4-6 year olds who performed with focus, commitment and professionalism and certainly proved that they were ‘the fairest of them all!’ We are excited to see what they come up with next.
WISE Boys Dance Company presented a dance piece inspired by Little Red Riding Hood, with a narrative that saw three wolves persuade Little Red Riding Hood to join them. The piece was independently choreographed after an inspiration workshop with James Cousins, and reflected their learning around the challenge of creating a dance performance with distinct characterisation. The boys did an incredible job of becoming the sinister characters and the audience were captivated with the jumps and lifts within the choreography.
When our Youth Drama Company took to the stage it was clear that the darker side of the fairy tales were being explored. With tinkling music boxes in the background, they explored the story of Hansel and Gretel. Through excellent ensemble work, we saw the forest emerge where Hansel and Gretel were approached by not one but two evil witches, who were eventually thrown into the fiery oven, conveyed beautifully using movement and props.
To finish the show, the Youth Dance Company reappeared with a beautiful interpretation of Rapunzel. Dressed in floaty golden gowns to represent Rapunzel's long flowing hair, they presented a dance piece which was a dreamlike and solemn end to the evening.
We would like to extend huge congratulations to all the Companies who displayed great talent and maturity in both rehearsals and performance.
