Fundraising Art Sale – works by Christopher Hall RBA, RCA (1930 – 2016)

When you next visit the Corn Exchange, you may see some beautiful paintings adorning the wall towards the auditorium doors.
These stunning paintings are the work of local artist Christopher Hall whose artistic journey was deeply rooted in his love for the countryside, architecture, and people. Born and raised in Inkpen and Enborne, his childhood was filled with an appreciation for the rural landscape, hobbies such as stamp collecting and cricket, and a talent for drawing and painting. This passion led him to study painting at the prestigious Slade School of Art in London, setting the foundation for an exceptional career as an artist.
In 1955, Christopher embarked on a series of painting trips to Italy, a country that would shape his life and work. It was there that he met Maria, whom he married in 1957. The couple initially settled in Aldermaston before making their permanent home in Newbury, where they raised three sons. Deeply committed to his community, Christopher served as a local councillor and, in 1967, was elected Mayor of Newbury. His dedication to both civic and artistic life made him a well-respected figure in the town.

Throughout his long and prolific career, Christopher produced over 3,800 oil paintings, capturing both rural and urban landscapes with a distinctive eye for architecture and human connection. His works, rich in a sense of place, reflect his extensive travels, from the rolling hills of Wales to the sunlit streets of Italy and France. He exhibited widely across England and Wales, with regular selections for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions, and remained actively painting into his final years.
This exhibition, made possible through the generosity of the Hall family, showcases a selection of Christopher’s remarkable paintings, each one a testament to his artistic vision and love for the world around him. The works on display are available for purchase, with 30% of the proceeds generously donated to the Old Library Campaign, which will see this historic Newbury building transformed into a vibrant arts hub for the community.
