101 Outdoor Arts Creation Space is our dedicated creation space for large-scale outdoor arts projects and company residencies.

OUTDOOR ARTS PROGRAMME

We run a year-round free outdoor arts programme presenting large-scale outdoor performance pieces produced by the Corn Exchange and 101 Outdoor Arts and by range of national and international companies.

Recent years have seen the outdoor programme continue to go from strength to strength. Each December, thousands of local people take part in the Festival of Light, either by creating a lantern to carry in the procession or by lining the streets to join this festive celebration. In June 2022 around 10,000 people filled Newbury town centre for Station House Opera’s Dominoes, a large-scale domino run which snaked its way through the town, over bridges, through buildings and off balconies before culminating in the final drop into the boating lake in Victoria Park. The tenth anniversary of the outdoor programme was celebrated in 2019 with the streets and waterways of Newbury being lit up by Carabosse’s Fire Garden.

Previous co-productions include 2015’s 451 where the Corn Exchange and Periplum came together to produce a visually stunning piece inspired by Ray Bradbury’s classic dystopian text Fahrenheit 451. The piece has since toured to festivals across Britain. The Corn Exchange and Mark Anderson's 2014 production of a Dada-ist WW1 commemoration performance, Furious Folly, also toured overseas to Belgium.
