Kennet Opera presents Benjamin Britten’s sparkling comic opera, Albert Herring, in the intimate setting of The Old Library.

In an early-1900s Suffolk village, the formidable Lady Billows is determined to crown a May Queen of impeccable virtue. When every local young woman proves unsuitable, the honour falls instead to Albert Herring: a shy, obedient greengrocer’s son. But a crown, a village fête, twenty-five sovereigns and one surprisingly potent glass of lemonade soon set Albert on a riotous path towards independence.

Full of eccentric characters, sharp wit, and Britten’s brilliantly theatrical music, this staged and costumed production is sung in English and is perfect for opera lovers and newcomers alike.

Directed by Lisa Harrington, with David Wordsworth as Music Director, pianist Ikuko Inoguchi, and lighting design by Simon Pike.

Join us for an evening of gossip, rebellion, and glorious music. Refreshments will be available from the Old Library Café Bar during the interval.

Albert Herring was first performed at Glyndebourne in 1947; Kennet Opera’s production takes place in its 80th-anniversary year.
