A man sings into a microphone with a warm glow on his face

On Saturday 7 September, one of the most popular and influential bands of the British ska movement, The Beat Feat. Ranking Jnr, comes to our stage.

The band crosses over fluidly between soul, reggae, pop and punk, and from these they created an infectious dance rhythm. Along with other popular bands of the movement, such as The Specials, The Selecter and Madness, The Beat became an overnight sensation.

By Christmas of 1979, The Beat were riding high in the UK charts with their first single, a remake of the classic Smokey Robinson tune Tears of a Clown. Over the course of the next five years The Beat toured relentlessly and released three studio albums: I Just Can’t Stop It, Wh’appen, both reaching number 3 in The UK album charts, followed by their third studio album Special Beat Service. The band toured the world, touring with artists such as David Bowie, The Police, REM, The Clash, The Talking Heads, The Pretenders, and The Specials, to name but a few.

The Beat kept scoring hits with tunes such as Mirror in the Bathroom, Hands Off… She’s Mine, Too Nice to Talk to, Save it for Later, I Confess, Stand Down Margaret, and their serene cover of Andy William’s Can’t Get Used to Losing You

The Beat Feat. Ranking Jnr continue to perform all the classic hits from their illustrious career in their dynamic live shows.

Supporting them will be local Reading based band, Jewels and The Jacuzzis. Having previously taken to the stage in Newbury Market Place at the annual Festival of Light, they will start the evening playing a fiery mix of blues, soul and reggae’n'roll with an eclectic variation of style and influences.

The Beat Feat. Ranking Jnr will be at the Corn Exchange Newbury on Saturday 7 September at 7pm. Tickets £27.25. To book tickets or for more information please click here or call 01635 522733.
