Help shape a new mural celebrating Greenham Common at The Base this summer

This summer, an immersive mural installation celebrating the local landscape will come to life at The Base Greenham with ideas from the community at its heart.

In celebration of Greenham Common’s 25th anniversary of becoming a public space, The Base Greenham has commissioned artist Katie O to create a mural that captures the essence of the Common – its landscapes, its history, and the personal connections that make it so special. They are looking for ideas to help shape that vision by inviting the community to share their photos, memories, and feelings about Greenham Common. Midlands-based artist Katie O, known locally as the creator of the colourful hopscotch art brightening Newbury’s town centre, will take the images and suggestions and weave them into a bespoke mural covering The Base’s Gallery walls.  

Greenham Common means something different to everyone, both locally and further afield. Whether it’s a go-to spot for a family bike ride, a peaceful haven for birdwatching, the place to gather with friends for the weekly Parkrun or memories are of it being the site of the American airbase, The Base would love to hear the local community's thoughts.

The Base is also inviting artists to exhibit their interpretation of this beautiful, important local space during the Wild Walls installation. These pieces will adorn the inner walls of the gallery and should be related to Greenham Common to tie in with the celebrations. Expressions of interest are encouraged from both emerging and established artists, and work will need to be available to be exhibited from the end of July to 6 September. Celebrating the spirit of Greenham Common through art, Wild Walls will run at The Base Greenham from Friday 1 August to Saturday 6 September, open Tue – Sun, 10am - 5pm.
